  City safety, a low speed collision-avoidance technology, becomes available on the 2010 Volvo XC60 this month, according to an article in the St. Petersburg Times. The  windshield mounted laser found in the new Vovlo XC60 system is designed to prevent low-speed crashes which occur when a driver fails to see that the car ahead has slowed or stopped. The laser sends infrared rays out as far as 18 feet ahead of a vehicle. A computer analyzes the rays reflected back from any object ahead of the car, and it automatically brakes the vehicle if it concludes a collision is imminent. Three fourths of all collisions happen at speeds below 19 mph, according to data. City Safety is just one of several new technologies designed to prevent crashes and save lives.
