Florida traffic accident statistics for 2009 have never looked better in the past 4 decades. The latest statistics reported by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FDMV) reveal that the 2009 fatality count fell to 1.3 per 100 million miles, the lowest reported number of fatalities since record keeping began back in the 1970's.

Basic Florida Traffic Accident Statistics

In 2009 there was a 3.1% decrease in overall traffic accidents with the number dropping from 243,342 in 2008 to 235,778. This also decreased the average crashes per day from 665 in 2008 to 646 in 2009, a 2.9% decrease. Fatalities were also down, with a 14.1% drop to 2,563 in 2009 and a similar 14.2% decrease in fatal crashes to 2,372.

The most dramatic statistical decreases in traffic accidents came in the number of teen drivers killed in 2009. The 2008 total of 109 dropped 26.6% to the 80 reported teen driver deaths from traffic accidents in 2009. Another very positive decrease was in the number of motorcyclists killed in 2009. The 2008 total was an alarming 502 which thankfully decreased to 376, a 25.1% drop.

Unfortunate Increases in Florida Traffic Accident Statistics

There were unfortunately 3 main categories which saw increases in traffic accidents according to the 2009 Florida traffic accident statistics: drug-related traffic accidents, bicycle-related traffic accidents, and teen traffic accidents.

Drug related injuries increased 19.3% when the 2008 incidents were reported at 819 and increased to 977 in 2009.
Drug related crashes increased 10.5% when the 2008 incidents were reported at 1,161 and increased to 1,283 in 2009.
Bicycle passengers killed increased 100% when the 2008 incidents were reported no fatalities and one was reported in 2009.
Bicycle passengers injured increased 2.1% when the 2008 incidents were reported at 48 and increased to 49 in 2009.
Teen passengers injured increased 0.5% when the 2008 incidents were reported at 8,613 and increased to 8,653 in 2009.
