Spine Injuries:

• Head, Neck, and Mandible Dynamics Generated by 'Whiplash'   
  Description: This study applies current head/neck extension-flexion dynamic data to develop linear and angular force-time histories experienced at the TMJ. Fourteen test collisions of motor vehicles utilizing seven live test subjects were conducted in July 1993.
• A Reason Why Whiplash Has Increased: Seat Properties and Neck Responses   
  Description: Whiplash has increased over the past two decades. This study compares occupant dynamics with three different seat types (two yielding and one stiff) in rear crashes. Responses up to head restraint contact are used to describe possible reasons for the increase in whiplash as seat stiffness increased in the 1980s and 1990s.
• Whiplash-type neck distortion in restrained car drivers: frequency, causes and long-term results   
  Description: An analysis was made of 1176 whiplash-type neck distortions taken from a total of 3838 restrained car driver incident reports. The percentage of whiplash-type neck distortion among injured drivers increased from less than 10% in 1985 to over 30% in 1997. Most occurred in head-on crashes or crashes with multiple collisions; only 15% occurred in rear-end collisions.
• Seat influences on female neck responses in rear crashes: a reason why women have higher whiplash rates   
  Description: This study addresses seat properties that may explain a reason for the higher rates in women, and changes in whiplash in general over the past two decades.
• A Numerical Investigation of Factors Affecting Cervical Spine Injuries During Rollover Crashes   
  Description: Factors affecting the risk of cervical spine injury in rollover crashes were investigated using a detailed finite element human head-neck model. Although many previous experimental and numerical studies have focused on cervical spine injury mechanisms and tolerance, none of them have investigated the risk of cervical spine injuries under loading condition similar to that in rollovers.
• Florida State University & Florida Chiropractic Assn. Propose An MRI Scanner for Use With Patients in Weight-Bearing Positions   
  Description: Florida State University (FSU) and the Florida Chiropractic Association (FCA) are exploring a revolutionary scanner for use in the proposed Health and Human Performance Center and Lab, which would be located in Tallahassee, Fla. This scanner, in addition to its ability to perform conventional scans, possesses the ability to scan patients in the weight-bearing position and will give scientists, researchers and physicians a better evaluation of health, disease and injuries in the dynamic state. This form of imaging is of significant interest in trauma and especially in the evaluation of the spine.
• Effectiveness of Physical Therapy and Epidural Steroid Injections in Lumbar Spinal Stenosis   
  Description: A study which compares the effects of epidural steroid injections and physical therapy program on pain and function in patients with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS).
• Cervical Spine Injuries Associated With the Incorrect Use of Airbags in Motor Vehicle Collisions   
  Description: The purpose of this study is to determine the rate of cervical spine injuries with correct and incorrect use of front driver and passenger-side airbags. Although there are abundant literature showing reduced injury severity and fatalities from seatbelts and airbags, no recent studies have delineated the affect of incorrect use of airbags in cervical spine injuries.

During a car wreck the body may be suddenly thrown forward, backward, and sideways. These movements can cause hyperextension (excessive forward movement) and hyperflexion (excessive backward movement), which can cause muscles, ligaments, and tendons to tear.

• Back Pain | Causes and Treatment   
  Description: Most acute back pain is the result of trauma to the lower back or a disorder such as arthritis. Pain from trauma may be caused by a sports injury, work around the house or a sudden jolt such as a car accident or other stress on spinal bones and tissues. Symptoms may range from muscle ache to shooting or stabbing pain, limited flexibility and range of motion or an inability to stand straight. Chronic back pain is pain that persists for more than 3 months. If back pain is the result of injury or disease, your doctor may order an MRI or x-ray to determine the extent of the damage. Back pain may be caused by a herniated disk, if so, surgery to remove or replace the disk (discectomy) can provide relief. Spinal fusion may also be used to treat injuries, ruptured disks and scoliosis.
