As Toyota deals with a massive recall of many of their vehicles with gas pedal flaws, many consumers may wonder
what action to take if they find themself in a car that accelerates out of control?
Consumer Reports recommends the following:
* Brake firmly. Do not pump the brakes
* Put the car into neutral
*Once the car is stopped, turn off the ignition. Because most drivers are not accustomed to putting their car into neutral,
Consumer reports recommends trying out the maneuver in a safe place-an empty parking lot, for example.
Toyota reports the condition is rare, but that overtime some accelerator pedal mechanisms may become worn. As a result of this wear combined with certain operating and environmental conditions, friction in the mechanism may increase and intermittingly result in the accelerator pedal being hard to depress, slow to return or, in the worst case, the accelerator pedal sticks in a partially open position.
