Young children must always be surpervised by a parent, caregiver or an adult while they are eating, for safety reasons and due to their potential risk of choking on food.

A 2008 study revealed top 10 foods that pose the highest risk of choking hazards for small children: hot dogs ( always cut them lengthwise before slicing), peanuts, carrots, boned chicken, candy, meat, popcorn, fish with bones, sunflower seeds and apples.

A doctor from the American Academy of Pediatrics reports certain other foods should not be given to a child under the age of 4 or 5.Such as: raw carrots, marshmellows, peanuts, popcorn, hard candies and gumballs. He also advises cutting grapes into quarters,

If you find yourself in a situation where your child is choking, here are some steps to follow recommended by healthychildren.org:

* Call 911
* Act quickly to remove the object
* If the child is more than 1 yr.old, perform the Heimlich maneuver
* If the child is younger than 1, rest the child face down on your knee and slap the back between the shoulder blades 5 times
* All caregivers should be CPR-certified, even if emergency responders are there within minutes, that's a lot of time for a child to be without oxygen to the brain
