An editorial in the St. Petersburg Times reports two candidates for St. Pete mayor are more focused on securing the endorsement of the city's police than on the safety of pedestrians and motorcyclists.

The police department currently has a no-chase policy which restricts officers from instigating a car chase except when in the pursuit of violent felons --- the most responsible policy in the Tampa Bay area.

The article states candidates Bill Foster and Scott Wagman would alter this plan to include pursuing nonviolent suspects. Wagman states that with police training and proper procedures the risk to public safety would be minimized.

The writer suggests otherwise -- other local law enforcement agencies with looser chase standards have resulted in far too many deaths and injuries over the last twenty years. Giving more freedom would place the public at risk, agrees police Chief Chuck Harmon.

Another mayoral candidate, said his sister was injured a few years ago when a fleeing suspect crashed his car into hers.
