A poll by the Canadian National Traffic Research Foundation suggests many folks believe Canadian motorcyclists are not behaving more or less risky on the roads than other drivers. The public seems less concerned about unsafe motorcycle riders than other road safety issues.

Researchers and interest groups, however, say concern is still warranted!

Here's a rundown on the findings of the report:

* The motorcyclist fatality rate in Canada has increased every year.

* Only 3.1% of Canadian motorcyclists report riding without a helmet.

* Survey data suggests Canadians believe improvement is needed in decreasing the number of riders who engage in
risky riding behaviors (weaving in and out of traffic; passing other vehicles when it is not safe; performing stunts on public roads; and riding well above the speed limit.)

Both Canadian drivers and motorcyclists agreed on various measures to discourage risky driving behaviors including:
impounding motorcycles for performing stunts on public roads; increased fines for the non-use of helmets for motorcyclists
and an engine size limitation for new motorcycle.
