Late Friday night in Clearwater, a 2 year- old child ran into the street on the corner of Cleveland Street and Frederica Avenue and was struck by a SUV. The child, Gabriel Johnson, was with his mother and other children, possibly relatives, when he moved into the street and was struck by an SUV driven by Robert C. Tausinger who was heading west.
The child was taken to Bayfront Medical Center and was responsive. The investigation continues and no charges are expected to be filed.
Child pedestrian injury is the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children ages 5-14. Six hundred children die annually due to pedestrian accidents while 38,400 children are treated each year in emergency rooms for pedestrian-related injuries.
Children are particularly vulnerable to injury as pedestrians due to dangers on the road – high traffic volume, high posted speed limits and dangerous drivers - all of which are found in the culture of a community that embraces cars rather than pedestrians and bicyclists. We each have a role to play in protecting children and minimizing their risk of injury.
