Memorial Day Road Safety Tips to Avoid Car Crashes and Fatal Injuries | Clearwater Car Crash Lawyer

If you are joining the nearly forty million drivers who are getting behind the wheel of a car this Memorial Day Weekend don't drive drowsy!

The National Sleep Foundation says falling asleep at the wheel accounts for 100,000 reported car crashes, 71,000 injuries and 1,550 fatal injuries every year.

Falling asleep at the wheel of a car was at the top of the list of tips for road safety for this weekend.

If you and your family/friends plan to be traveling, here are some additional safety reminders:

Wear your seatbelt; (50% of fatal injuries could have been prevented by wearing one);

Signal your intentions so others on the road know;

Don't tailgate (leave a car length's distance for every 10mph);

Move away from those tailgaters who usually use poor judgment;

Avoid standing water and if you have to drive through it (we all have lately with these rains!) do it slowly and avoid a collision due to the sudden use of your brakes or turning sharply; (and if you do hydroplane - don't hit your brakes, take your foot off the accelerator and turn your wheel in the direction you want to travel)

Be aware of pedestrians and give them the right of way;

Turn the headlights on when needed;

Follow the speed limit (speeding & reckless driving account for a large number of fatal car crashes each year) and

Stay alert (that means wait until you pull off the road to use that cell phone, text or read the map!

Accident statistics are grim! Be aware that every 18 seconds a U.S. driver is involved in an auto accident and every 11 minutes someone dies in a car crash. No one ever believes it will happen to them!

Memorial Day is the 3rd most dangerous holiday for car accidents, behind Thanksgiving and July 4th. Don't let you or your loved ones become a statistic. Play it safe and arrive alive!
